The Conjuring Universe is currently one of the most successful cinematic shared continuities, featuring several successful spinoffs and sequels. Helping to bring interest back to the moribund horror genre, the series retells the cases of real-world paranormal investigators Ed and Lorraine Warren.
Each film, many of which are on HBO Max, notes that it’s inspired by these real-life but controversial cases, making the horror that much more terrifying. Beyond the Conjuring movies, there are several other classic horror flicks which also delve into the Warrens’ most chilling, hairsplitting supernatural cases. Here’s a look at those movies and how they connect to the situations portrayed in the Conjuring Universe’s series of scares.
The first film to bring a case dealt with by the Warrens to the big screen was the 1979 classic, The Amityville Horror, starring James Brolin and Margot Kidder as George and Kathleen Lutz. The young couple purchase an old house and are soon victimized by a series of increasingly devilish supernatural happenings. These stem from a murder which took place years before in which an entire family was killed.
