Halifax County School Board plans to meet Monday at 7:30 p.m. in the public meeting room of the Mary Bethune Office Complex in Halifax for a budget work session.

The board is slated to approve its budget following the work session.

The school board has been reviewing a proposed $76,946,463 fiscal year 2023 budget.

The board has previously said they would be requesting $15,712,651 from the county and $1,272,500 for capital projects.

The $15 million is in line with the governor’s proposed budget.

The Senate proposed a RLE of $15,856,416, and the House is proposing a RLE of $15,337,020.

The required local effort will be decided after the General Assembly approves the state budget.

The General Assembly adjourned their regular session without finalizing the state budget and plan to convene in a special session on April 4.

In the meantime, the school board has been discussing budget priorities such as compensation and security.

Board members had previously discussed including in their budget $3,390,026 for teachers to receive a 5% pay increase plus a step increase on their salary scale and for SOQ-funded positions to also receive a 5% increase.
