People living in Kalamazoo near The Graphic Packaging International carboard recycling plant have complained for years about their neighborhood’s quality of life due to airborne chemicals and health impacts connected to pollution.

After months of planning, Graphic Packaging International announced Wednesday the city of Kalamazoo will unveil a new committee to create a Community Benefits Agreement with the paper company. City officials will announce the members of the eight person committee during the Kalamazoo city commission Dec. 6 meeting.

“The committee will consist of representatives from the city and community, along with representatives from Graphic Packaging who are uniquely qualified to create an agreement that benefits the community,” Graphics Packaging International officials said in a statement.

The company said it hopes city commission will review a finalized agreement by April 2022.

Details of any possible agreement are yet to be determined. Some community members are calling for money for residents to relocate.
