For a political party to be reborn it must first die. Some Republicans believe their party died of a deadly disease called Trumpism, despite not mentioning it in their manifesto. They recently stated: “We cannot remain calm in the face of increasing political extremism.”

A Call for American Renewal is a new organization born from 150 Republicans who have served or embraced the conservatism of the historic Republican Party. Including former governors, senators, representatives, cabinet officials, agency chiefs and journalists.

Michael Steele, the former head of the Republican National Committee, is one of them. Christine Todd Whitman, former New Jersey governor, is another. Tom Ridge, a former Pennsylvania governor and our first homeland security secretary, is another. Minnesota Governor Arne Carlson and Senator David Durenberger are among the signatories. Iovan, Jim Leach too. Together the founders have several hundred years in the service of the nation, its states and their Grand Old Party.

You describe yourself in modest understatement as “a group of national, state and local leaders”. They certainly are, but they are more. You are the heart and soul of the historic Republican Party that was once strong but barely survives today. These are the real things and they have enough.
