The Ed Orgeron era is over at LSU, with the two sides agreeing on a separation that will have Orgeron finish the season as head coach while the school and athletics director Scott Woodward conduct the coaching search.
Given Woodward’s track record of only taking big swings at proven names and being unwilling to gamble on upside, the pool looks somewhat shallow. But the job is extremely attractive, as each of the last three coaches have won it all in Baton Rouge. Will Jimbo Fisher again follow Woodward, who brought him to A&M? Mario Cristobal and James Franklin are proven winners who know how to recruit in the SEC. For guys like Franklin, there could be competition from fellow blueblood USC, which is conducting a coaching search of its own.
Beyond that, have Lane Kiffin or Mel Tucker done enough to get consideration for the job? Is Mark Stoops a big enough of a splash? Or could Joe Brady come back from the NFL?
